You have to be over 60 to remember the Coronation. I was in Sheffield at the time and, along with thousands of other excited children stood for what seemed like hours only for a black limousine to flash past at 30 mph. So that was the Queen! At least we all got a small tin of chocolates and a crown (a five shilling coin to the unitiated) in a special plastic case. The chocolate soon went but I still have the crown, which is probably worth at least 50p today. My experience apart, it was a huge event for the nation and kickstarted the television age. Every village, town and city went overboard – with decorations, street parties and spectacular events.
The photograph of Barry Street shows the remarkable lengths local communities went to to mark the occasion. Barry Street is probably familiar to many Evertonians as it runs between Walton Road and Walton Lane close to Goodison. Will there be a repeat for the next coronation? I doubt it.

i lived at 82 barry st from 1945 until being cpo,d in 1971.The arches , at the street ends where built by all the men and each house had its own arched trellis. They where covered in paper flowers made by the residents, as were the bunting, from coloured crepe paper. From each trellis hung a flower basket stuffed with real moss and ferns picked from Bluebell woods or Spinney woods in Kirkby. We had our own King and Queen who where Danny connolly and Elaine (forgotten her second name). I still have the photos as well as a cup, saucer and plate decoratrd to commemorate the occassion. The party seemed to go on for weeks and we never had so much food in our lies.Great,Great Memories.
Thanks for the memory, Roy. I was hoping that someone would recognise the photograph.
God this brings back memories! I lived in Cockerell Street not far away from here.
Not like the old days now – then you knew your local people.
I lived with my grandma in Cockerell Street, which was the next street to Barry Street. We kids were all taken on a charabanc trip on the morning of the Coronation while the grown-ups decorated the street. When we came back there was a huge street party with a fancy dress competition and a concert.Everyone was just like one big family then and we never had to lock our doors.Front doors were always open and neighbours would just pop in at any time.
I lived opposite Roy Corke at 79 Barry street. The Queen was Elaine Swinburne who lived at the top of the street near to the church. The whole area has been pulled down but they have retained the names in the new housing estate they built. I remember we went by bus to the new airport in Speke as a treat then we had our street party. So long ago !!!!.
Hi Roy We Lived at 96, i am still good friends with Eileen Holden, if you get anymore pics, can you upload them please, many thanks. Ann & Margaret Swarbrick !!!
In the 1900s My grandparents (The McBryde’s) lived in number 97. Barry Street.
I was born In 1932 And we lived in number 92…
We then moved to Spellow Lane. Off Walton Lane…
In 1937 my father took over as manager of the Kendal Castle Pub Fountains Road.
(A very well-known Liverpool Comedian lived in number 96, Norman Vaughan).
I might be wrong about Norman Vaughan living at number 96..it migh have been 94
I was wrong, I knew he lived in Barry Street, but I was wrong about the address.
I have Googled him and found he was born in his aunts house, Number 32.
Thanks too everyone that has added their little bit about Barry Street.
I brought back fond memories of my family.
I hope others see this and add more
