This photograph of Havelock Street was photographed by Karl Hughes to be used as an illustration in
Liverpool author, Frank Shaw’s book ‘My Liverpool’, published in 1971.
What is immediately apparent is the traffic-free street, giving the children the freedom to play outside. With no open space nearby and other amenities very limited, the street became a focal point for the community in a way that no longer exists.

I remember walking up Havelock St as a child but seem to remember a handrailin 1960′s, not shown in this image, to assist the pedestrain as the street was very steep!!!
There was a handrail certainly in the 1950s. My friends and I would toss over the handrail to see who could do the best. The handrail was on the lefthand side looking down Havelock street
all the way to Netherfield road.
I refer to the photograph on Page fourteen of the book ” TheLost Tribe of Everton by Ken Rogers
The photograph is of Havelock Street Liverpool, By Karl Hughes, It states that the photograph
was taken in 1960,I think it was taken more 1948 /50. My reason fore saying this is, Looking at the photo there is not one television aerial , fitted on the chimney stacks, there is not one car in the street, My wife remembers the dress on one of the children belonging to her and the
other children as being her friends who lived in Havelock street, Compare this photo with the
one on page 17 Where you will see T V aerial fitted

Hi Jim,
I know the photograph was taken c1960 because it was part of a commission Karl Hughes took on to illustrate Frank Shaw’s book My Liverpool. I think the girls’ dresses suggest this period rather than earlier. There is one aerial on the actual photo – but this has been lost on the lo res web image.
I was born in HAVELOCK STREET in no 36 (my nan’s house).Evlin locker is my cousin. Hazel Walker (now Eden)
I was brought up in Havelock Street from 1943 to 1968.
We lived in number 46 the top house on the left looking down towarde Netherfield Road next to the waste ground at the top, there was a handrail 0n our side I used to chain my motorbike to it.
I remember the Lockers (Reggie) and the Baileys I think they were related I also remember Gardners grocers and old Mrs Seddons greengrocers on Northumbland Terrace.

Does anyone remember Nicholson Street, which I think was very close to Havelock Street. My Dad lived there in the 1920′s. Just wanted a photo or some information about the street.
