I had a Saturday job in the mid 1970s at Littlewoods on Walton Hall Avenue. It is striking how very similar it was to this photo of 40 years before. A vast hanger of an industrial building, serried ranks of women flicking speediy through huge piles of paper with the assistance of mechanical adding machines. Strict timekeeping through scary supervisors and ancient clocking on machines, and random searches of staff; but on the otherhand 'music while you work' on the tannoy. In less than 10 years, office work was calculators, computers and flexi, and different still, now, with remote working/hot-desking, video conferencing, smart-phones etc.
